Technical notes:Heat Exchanger
A heat exchanger transfers heat between two fluids. A shell-and-tube exchanger consists of a shell, tube bundle, tubesheets and heads. TEMA defines three classes by service: R (refinery and petroleum), B (chemical process) and C (general commercial). The pressure parts on the shell and tube sides are usually designed to ASME Section VIII.
- Typical applications
- Heating, cooling and condensing in petrochemical and chemical processes
- Heat recovery in food and pharma
- Cooling water and steam service in utilities
- Common materials
- SA-516 Gr.70 (shell)
- SA-240 304/316L
- Tubes selected for the medium
- Applicable codes
- TEMA Standards (Class R/B/C)
- ASME BPVC Section VIII, Division 1 (U designator)
- Taiwan Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Rules and Construction Standards
FAQ
What do you need for a heat exchanger quote?
Both fluids with flow, inlet/outlet temperatures and operating pressures, allowable pressure drop, and whether a removable bundle (e.g. U-tube) is needed for cleaning.
Which TEMA class should I choose?
As a rule, Class R for refinery and petroleum service, Class B for chemical process service and Class C for general commercial service, or as your owner’s specification requires.
