Technical notes:Jacketed Vessel
A jacketed vessel has an outer jacket around the inner shell through which steam, thermal oil or cooling water flows to heat or cool the contents. The inner shell and the jacket usually have separate design pressures and temperatures that are calculated separately.
- Typical applications
- Chemical reactions and heated storage
- Food heating, cooling and pasteurisation
- Viscous products that need temperature control
- Common materials
- SA-240 304/316L
- SA-516 Gr.70
- Applicable codes
- ASME BPVC Section VIII, Division 1 (U designator)
- Taiwan Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Rules and Construction Standards
FAQ
Is a jacketed vessel a Category 1 pressure vessel in Taiwan?
Under Taiwan’s Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Rules, a vessel that receives external steam or another heating medium to heat solids or liquids inside, with internal pressure above atmospheric, is a Category 1 pressure vessel and must be inspected. Confirm against your design conditions.
What do you need for a quote?
Design pressure and temperature for both the inner shell and the jacket, the heating or cooling medium, required duty, volume and material.
