Technical notes:Fuel Tank
A fuel tank stores diesel, heavy fuel oil and other liquid fuels. Most are atmospheric or low-pressure carbon steel tanks, horizontal or vertical above ground, or buried. Key design points include corrosion protection, venting, overfill prevention and level monitoring.
- Typical applications
- Fuel supply for generators and boilers
- Plant fuel storage
- Emergency standby fuel
- Common materials
- Carbon steel such as SS400 or SA-516 Gr.70
- Applicable codes
- Pressure vessel codes apply depending on operating pressure
- Local fire and hazardous materials rules
FAQ
Is a fuel tank a pressure vessel?
An atmospheric fuel tank is usually not a pressure vessel; pressurised service is classified by pressure and volume. Local fire and hazardous-materials rules also apply.
Can you build underground fuel tanks?
Yes. Underground tanks need external corrosion protection and design for burial loads; please send the installation conditions.
