Technical notes:Lined Steel Tank
A lined steel tank uses a carbon steel shell to carry pressure and structural loads, with an internal lining that keeps corrosive media away from the steel. Compared with building the whole vessel in a corrosion-resistant alloy, a lined design balances strength and cost.
- Typical applications
- Storage of acids, alkalis and chemical waste
- Intermediate tanks in chemical and petrochemical processes
- Common materials
- Shell: carbon steel such as SA-516 Gr.70 or SS400
- Lining: selected for the medium
- Applicable codes
- ASME BPVC Section VIII, Division 1 (U designator)
- Taiwan Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Rules and Construction Standards
FAQ
How is the lining material chosen?
By the medium’s composition, concentration and temperature, and whether there is abrasion. Please send full medium data with your inquiry so the lining type and thickness can be evaluated.
Does a lined vessel still need pressure vessel inspection?
Yes. Whether a vessel is regulated depends on its pressure and volume, not on the lining.
